Excess Baggage

Here we go, the 3rd of January and the first day back at the gym. The scale tells me that I’m 2 kilos heavier, but to be honest I can’t remember what weight I was before Christmas. It was an exceptional week, with Christmas, my 30th Birthday and a spectacular wedding on New Year’s Eve, so I don’t even mind the few additional pounds. “It’s Christmas” I told myself. The truth is, I still haven’t shed the few extra pounds I brought home from my All-inclusive holiday in Cancun last October and to be brutally honest, I’ve been kidding myself for months. My post Christmas diet, comprised mainly of Ferrero Rocher and Cocktails.
Over the last few years I have done so much to improve my health, my fitness and my overall happiness, but there is still some work left to do. 2016 was tough for a number of reasons and to be truthful, a lot of my progress slowed to a halt. I am still healthier than I have been in a very long time, but it has not been quite enough.
I have reached a point in life where I can be comfortable in my own skin, but travelling with excess baggage doesn’t come easy. I haven’t worn a bikini since I was 15 and I have always wished that I could confidently lie on a beach without covering myself with a towel. Some other cultures are also not so politically correct and in the past I’ve heard comments such as “I can tell you like to eat” from local people who were not trying to be mean, but merely making an observation. Shopping for clothes in Asia was also an interesting experience, as shopkeepers commented “In your size, not possible” or “Lady, I have big size just for You”.
So today it’s time to be honest. Yes, I have come a long way on this weight loss journey of mine, but I have certainly let my wanderlust lifestyle get in the way. My 2017 New Year’s resolution is to try to instill some routine into my life. Believe me, routine does not come easy to a girl who has 6 foreign trips planned in the next 5 months!
This year, I want to shed those last few kilos. I don’t want to change who I am, but I want to be the best possible version of myself. I don’t want to compare myself to others, but I want to be better than I have been before. In 2017, I aim to bring you along on my journey with a completely honest account of what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong. I would love for you to join me in making this year the better than before.

  1. IN the same boat – just want to shed the extra pounds before we move – travelling in south east Asia where the people are so tiny was a bit traumatic last time! Also to be fitter is my goal – its a total necessity now at nearly 50. Have a great year! You look fabulous!


  2. It’s so hard to stay consistently healthy / consistently at ANY weight when you’re a traveler! I lost weight like a crazy person sweating and dancing in Africa… but right now, after a whole summer (I know, that was MONTHS ago) of beer drinking in Alaska… well, let’s just say there’s room for improvement. Happy new year!


  3. Hi Clair. Wonderful blog post and I totally share the Asia experiences. I lived in Nepal for almost 3 years and buying clothes there was a nightmare. Even when I tailor made my clothes the tailors seemed to not believe my size or something and they always were too tight when they came out ready. I wish you good luck with becoming the best version of yourself whether that includes losing the extra few kilos or not. I guess becoming the best version of yourself is more about doing what you want and feeling good about yourself and be proud on who you are and what you have become.


  4. Weight is a tricky thing and there so much info (sometimes conflicting) out there on what you should be doing to stay healthy. Now I’ve gone past the mid 30’s mark I notice it’s much easier to put on a few kg’s if you’re not careful. I have exercised regularly for as long as I can remember but only recently have I realised that your diet is just, if not more important. I read a comment recently by a gymnastics coach which sums it up for me ‘exercise is not a substitute for a bad diet’


  5. It’s amazing how much sugar we eat over Christmas and even more so in all inclusive resorts. You’ve paid for the resort so the attitude is to eat and drink as much as possible! As a man I think the best moves for women in the gym are dead lifts and squats, men love to look at a toned behind and strong legs! You’ve got to stop eating the sugar though!


  6. I feel you! I have been battling with weight forever. I lost 56 kilos and kept it off for ages. I then started traveling and slowly it trickled back on. I still stayed ok for the last few years but having changed my job to freelance and working from home, its even harder now. All the best of luck! You can do it! We both can!
